The Best White Wines from Campania, Italy
Cool down with these delicious white wines from near Naples
With this beautiful beach weather we are enjoying on the Amalfi Coast, about the only thing on our minds is staying cool and enjoying the summer. So, we thought it was appropriate to share with you the best white wines from the Italian region of Campania, where the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Naples are located. These refreshing wines are perfect for enjoying on your next vacation to Italy or of course you can look for them at your local wine shop.
Some of the white wine regions you will find in Campania are the following: Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Falerno dal Massico, Palagrello Bianco, Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio bianco, and Costa d' Amalfi. Each is unique, with differing grape varities used as well as soil, growing and aging methods. The most famous are Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, produced in the inland countryside surrounding the city of Avellino.
Almost 20% of top Italian whites are from Campania!
According to food and wine writer Tom Hyland in his article Italy’s 50 Best White Wines published on June 5th, 2019 in Forbes, Campania is home to Italy’s very best white wines. Hyland writes, “Campania may be home to the finest whites in Italy, and Greco di Tufo is arguably the best white of Campania, both for its structure - the finest examples display amazing complexity after 7-10 years - and their distinct minerality. I've rated the Pietracupa Greco di Tufo as the best white of Italy for several years, but I've recently tasted the Greco di Tufo from Petilia that is as pure and as harmonious.”
In fact, there are nine Campania wines in his list of top 50 wines in all of Italy, which is almost 20% of the top whites coming from just this one region (there are 20 Italian regions!). Here are the wines on the list, including a few honorable mentions.
