Do's and Don'ts For the Perfect Naples Shore Excursion

Expert tips for planning an amazing day trip from Naples Port

A shore excursion from the port of Naples can be the absolute best day of your 7 or 10-day Mediterranean Sea cruise. Naples is one of the most interesting ports in Italy and Europe, offering access to amazing destinations like the Amalfi Coast towns of Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi, Sorrento on the Sorrentine Peninsula, the buzzing city of Naples, the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, mainland Europe’s only active volcano Mt. Vesuvius, and so much more. We specialize in arranging for personalized day trips from Naples so we wanted to share our expert do’s and don’ts for planning your next Naples shore excursion.

Don’t try to go by yourself into neighborhoods in Naples that are outside the main tourist areas. While the city of Naples is fantastic and is currently experiencing a sort of Renaissance, the rough areas are still really rough and it makes no sense to go there on your own. Be smart and use a local driver and guide if you want to see some lesser-explored areas so you can enjoy your day trip and don’t end up getting mugged.

Do book a private excursion with a local Italian company and take a pass on the ones offered by the cruise lines. We can arrange for a shared or private excursion so you get to decide exactly where you want to go during your day trip from Naples Port and prices can be less than what you would pay the cruise lines, especially if you opt to create your own shared tour.

Don’t try to see it all. We have people that try to see too much and then don’t really get to enjoy anything. Southern Italy is all about la dolce vita – the sweet life - and slowing down. We can work with you to create a personalized itinerary that will give you plenty of bucket list checks but also allow for time for a nice meal or drink overlooking the sparkling sea.

Do try the local food because it is amazing! Pizza in Naples and on the Amalfi Coast has been elevated to an art form. If you are a foodie, be sure to ask your guide or driver for the best place to try any of the local specialties including pizza, coffee, sfogliatelle, seafood and more. All our drivers and guides are locals and will happily take you to their favorite place for an authentic taste of the region. Or better yes, book a Gastronomic Tour so you are sure to experience the best food of our region.

Don’t try to take the train from Naples to Sorrento. Yes, there is a train that goes there from Naples, but it is often late or has problems and this is not an ideal way to experience the beauty of the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast, plus how bad would it feel to miss your ship’s departure if something goes wrong?

Do tell us if you have a special request so we can accommodate your needs! Traveling with kids? Ask us about making the day fun for them as well (we have kids, so we know how to plan a successful family day). Have a few senior citizens in the group? Be sure to let us know so that we plan your day accordingly and suggest the best towns for those with mobility issues. Do you love food and wine? So do we and we are happy to plan a day around the best foodie experiences.

Do get a guide in Pompeii. It is so much better to visit with a local and you will have added bonuses like skipping the entrance line, heading to the most interesting spots and being able to experience the site in just 2 hours instead of wandering aimlessly by yourselves.

Do get in touch with us! We are waiting to hear from you.
