Excursion 3 - Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius & Herculaneum
This tour is offered with these options:
Visiting all three areas in one day is possible but very rushed and not recommended.
At about 1pm on 24 August AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted violently. By the end of the following day, thousands of people were dead and the flourishing Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum had disappeared beneath tons of ash, pumice and solidified mud.
In stark contrast, the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum provide an unparalleled glimpse into the daily life of Roman society in its entirety. These sites yield not only treasures but also invaluable artefacts that shed light on everyday life during the Roman Empire. From grand structures to humble dwellings, these towns reveal the intricate complexity of the ancient world with remarkable clarity.
Reserve your air-conditioned vehicle with an English speaking driver to explore one area in the morning. Enjoy a delicious Italian lunch and continue your journey to another site in the afternoon. Return promtly to you cruise ship, enriched with a greater appreciation of Roman history going back 2000 years.
POMPEII: An incredible open-air museum shaped by a natural disaster. Walk the actual streets that crumbled beneath the Romans' feet 2000 years ago. Pompeii, buried under 6 metres of ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, was rediscovered in 1749, providing a detailed insight into the city's life during the Roman Empire.
HERCULANEUM: A Roman town frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Walk through remarkably preserved streets, homes, and public buildings, gaining a unique glimpse into daily life during ancient times. Rich history and fascinating archaeological finds make Herculaneum an extraordinary destination for history enthusiasts.
MT. VESUVIUS: Explore mainland Europe's only live volcano! the infamous volcano that dramatically altered history with its catastrophic eruption in 79AD. A trip to Mt. Vesuvius promises both natural beauty and a captivating journey into the past. Your driver will take you up 1000 metres, from there you have an optional 30-minute walk to the crater; Once at the top you can walk a third of the circumference for a peek inside the crater, possibly catching sight of a fumarole (steam/gas vents). BUT most of all enjoy a spectacular view over the bay of Naples.
This is a physically difficult excursion involving a lot of walking, comfortable shoes must be worn!!
