Hidden Amalfi Coast: The Ceramics of Vietri sul Mare

The beautiful ceramics of Vietri sul Mare

To truly discover the beauty of the Amalfi Coast, let us take you to the hidden gems of this beautiful region, such as the small town of Vietri sul Mare, famous for its bright and colorful ceramics. This town, sometimes referred to as the gateway of the Amalfi Coast, is the perfect first stop on a shore excursion from the Port of Salerno, less than 20 minutes away by car. It also works well as the first destination during a shore excursion from the Port of Naples, then working your way back up the coast with stops at lovely villages such as Ravello, Amalfi, Positano or Sorrento before we take you back to your ship in the Port of Naples.

The town can trace its roots all the way back to the Etruscan settlement of Marcina. The website of the town says that “recent archeological discoveries have brought to light … tombs with archaic ceramic decorations in Corinthian style and a Roman thermal bath structure”…. among other historic finds. For over a thousand years, the inhabitants have been ceramic makers and artisans, with the first written documents attesting to ceramics trade appearing in 899 AD. Even in the more recent past, the wonderful position of Vietri sul Mare between North and South Italy allowed the ceramics trade to flourish and become one of the most important in Italy.

Where to discover and purchase Vietri sul Mare Ceramics

Depending on your interest in ceramics, there are various possibilities for learning more about this historic art or purchasing something for yourself. Simply visiting the town and walking the streets you will find decorated tiles and pieces on display on buildings, houses and along the sidewalks and streets. There will be plenty of opportunity to browse the local shops, or we can take you to a local producer such as Ceramica Artistica Solimene with a building that is itself a work of art, or perhaps a smaller workshop where you can see the artisans hard at work and select your favorite piece to take home.

Another interesting place for visitors who want to delve deeper is the Vietri Ceramics Museum, created to showcase the history and most important pieces of ceramics. All of these locations not only have beautiful artistic creations but also beautiful sea views to the stunning Mediterranean Sea, charming streets with shopping and delicious restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere characteristic of the slow pace of life.

Another hidden gem - Amalfi Coast wine

Besides ceramics, this area produces wonderful wines with tiny vineyards tucked up into the hillsides that are a part of the Costa d’Amalfi DOC wine region. One in particular stands out: Le Vigne di Raito, located in Raito. Le Vigne di Raito is a tiny producer who follows organic and biodynamic techniques to grow Aglianico and Piedirosso grape varieties that they then use to make their red and rosè wines. We can arrange for a visit and tasting upon request on their fantastic terrace overlooking the sparkling sea in the distance.

There are so many hidden gems along the Amalfi Coast, and we know them all. Come discover the authentic Amalfi Coast during a day trip with us and experience the region like a local.
