Port of Sorrento information ...

What can you do from a cruise ship arriving in the Port of Sorrento?

SORRENTO is located on the Sorrento Peninsula that juts out toward the Island of Capri and separates the Bay of Naples from the Amalfi Coast. It is often considered to be part of the Amalfi Coast although technically it is not. Sorrento is the perfect arrival destinations for people wanting to explore not only to the north, with destinations such as Naples, Vesuvius, and Pompeii, but also to the south, with destinations like Positano, Amalfi and Ravello all within easy reach. Our private tours work from the port of Sorrento or from a hotel in Sorrento or out on the Sorrento Peninsula.

To the south of Sorrento lies one of the most enchanting shorelines that you could ever imagine - the Amalfi Coast. Twisting coastal roads wind along dramatic rock faces with houses perched on cliffs above the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. These charming villages offer fresh sea air, stunning views, tiny streets filled with local artisan shops and restaurants serving up the fresh catch of the day.

To the north are the two amazing archaeological sites Pompeii and Herculaneum where you can experience the Roman way of life from 2000 years ago in the most popular archaeological sites in Italy as well as the towering Mt. Vesuvius, a still active volcano that is waiting to be explored. The area around Sorrento offers some of the best gourmet food that you can enjoy on a gourmet tour, to learn about and taste gelato, olive oil, pizza, limoncello and the wonderful local wine.

We offer private, tailor-made shore excursions, conducted by professional English-speaking drivers in fully air-conditioned vehicles. If you have already been to the Amalfi Coast, tell us what you did last time and ask us about alternative ideas – we are happy to create something new and exciting just for you.

Arriving in the Cruise Port of Sorrento, Italy

The Port of Sorrento is small, so your cruise ship will anchor at a distance and you will need to take a smaller boat called a tender (also called a launcher) supplied by your cruise ship to come into the port of Sorrento and arrive dockside. Here you will find your friendly English-speaking driver waiting for you with a sign. He will take you to the awaiting vehicle and on to whichever fantastic itinerary you have selected for your day.

Our private tours usually start at 8am and last until around 5pm, but of course, this depends on your ship’s schedule. We will create the perfect day around your docking and sailing times, so you get to see as much as possible and also make it back to your ship on time to sail to your next destination.

So, the question is… what can we visit from the Cruise Port of Sorrento?

  • Gourmet Food Tour and Sorrento

If you want to see the wonderful town of Sorrento and explore the Sorrento Peninsula and you love Italian food, then the best tour for you is the gourmet food tour. Discover the terraces and tucked away producers of authentic, local foods in the hills above Sorrento. You will go to an olive oil factory and learn about how extra virgin olive oil is made and take a walk through olive, lemon and orange groves. Then on to a stunning scenic viewpoint for a photo opportunity on top of a mountain with views both to the Bay of Naples and towards the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Salerno. You will be taken to a winery for a visit and tasting of nine wines. Then you will move on to a mozzarella cheese producer to learn about this fantastic cheese and see it being made before tasting the fresh product during a delightful light lunch, ending with a taste of the local lemon liqueur called limoncello. The end of your day is to see the actual town of Sorrento, with streets lined with artisan shops and the beautiful Piazza Tasso main square. This seaside town has its origins before Roman times and has been a destination for wealthy foreigners, artists, and writers because of wonderful weather and incredible sweeping views. A gelato making experience at Sorrento’s best gelateria can also be arranged, just inquire!

  • Pompeii and Vesuvius, Herculaneum or Naples

Do you want to experience history first hand? A tour of Pompeii paired with an afternoon to see Vesuvius, Herculaneum or Naples is a wonderful full day tour you shouldn’t miss! Your friendly driver will point out places of interest as you head away from the Port of Sorrento toward Pompeii archaeological site, your first destination. In less than an hour you will arrive at the most visited archaeological site in Italy, the Roman town of Pompeii, which was buried under ash and stone when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. We can arrange for a private guide to take you on a two-hour private tour, allowing you to skip the entrance line, and explore all the most interesting and cool sites in this vast park. Next, your driver will take you to lunch at a nice local restaurant or perhaps a winery where you can try the wonderful local wine Lacryma Cristi, from grapes grown on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius in the mineral rich volcanic soil. In the afternoon, you can choose to climb to the top of the still active volcano, Vesuvius, for amazing views to the Bay of Naples as well as a look inside the crater with its sulphur vents and craggy peak. Or perhaps you want to continue learning about the fascinating archaeology of the region by visiting another town that was frozen in time in 79AD called Herculaneum with fascinating relics to rival those discovered in Pompeii. Another idea is to head to the vibrant city of Naples, a lively and fascinating city filled with beautiful churches, castles, shopping streets and museums. Naples is also home to the first and most authentic pizza, as well as the birthplace of the pizza margherita. As legend has it, the pizza was made in 1889 by local pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito for the visit of Queen Margherita and features the colours of the Italian flag: red (sauce), white (mozzarella) and green (basil). Yum!

Your first impressions of the Amalfi Coast will be along the most impressive road on the coast, connecting Sorrento to Positano along the Amalfi Drive. The beauty of the mountains plunging directly into the Mediterranean Sea will take your breath away. Positano is your first stop, this luxury resort area is known for its very colorful villas and hotels and artisans workshops in the tiny streets leading to the waterfront where you can find everything from ceramics to handcrafted shoes or limoncello liqueur. Your day continues to Praiano, Furore and Conca dei Marini, area of the famed Path of the Gods trail and the most amazing scenery. Let your driver know what type of lunch you would like. Your driver, who has become a new friend, will return you safely to your port of call as he tells you local stories and lore.

Shore Trip Full Amalfi Coast

Shore Trip Full Amalfi Coast

Have you already visited the Amalfi Coast area? Looking for something different to do or travelling with kids? Don’t have very long to spend?

If you have done the classic Amalfi Coast tours already on previous trips to the area, why not do something a bit different? For instance, the city of Naples is quickly becoming one of Italy’s top city destinations. Not only does it have incredible, genuine food and wonderful restaurants, it is filled with art, architecture, archaeology, shopping and is literally layered with history. We can arrange for a local guide or you can do a small group Naples Underground tour to discover the treasures below your feet going back a millennium. If cities aren’t your thing, why not head to a less crowded archaeological park like Herculaneum, which many people think is more interesting than the super popular Pompeii.

Are you travelling with children? Our drivers are specially trained to be attentive to kids’ needs and keep them entertained. They won’t be glued to their cell phones or ipads during our Child Friendly Tours….because they will be so excited to experience Italy hands-on. We can customize the day for you depending on the ages of your children, but we will always provide plenty of stops for keeping their tummies full and their little hands busy. At a child’s pace, they can explore the archaeological site of Pompeii with a child-friendly guide. They can make margherita pizza in a real pizzeria with a master pizza maker and then, of course, get to eat the pizza they have created. And of course, we know the way to any child’s heart is through gelato! You and your kids can enjoy learning to make the best gelato ice cream in Italy at a local gelateria in Sorrento.

Do you only have a half-day in the Port of Sorrento? No problem! We can still show you something wonderful! We can do a custom half-day (about 5 hours) tour to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius or Positano and have you back to your ship with plenty of time to spare.
